GEOL 0350: Mathematical Methods of Fluid and Solid Geophysics and GeologyBrown Critical Review LinkIntended for undergraduates concentrating in geological and physical sciences or engineering, especially those interested in the quantitative study of Earth. Problem sets will cover common approaches to quantify the dynamics and chemistry of solids and fluids in nature. Mathematical topics to be introduced include linear algebra, vectors and tensors, differential equations, dynamical systems, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, empirical orthogonal functions, fractals, chaos, and statistics. Applications include waves in the oceans, atmosphere, and solid earth, convective and conductive heat flow, reaction rates, gravitational potential energy, Newton’s laws on a rotating planet, measuring coastlines and ranges, and dating errors in stratigraphy. You can access the syllabus, class calendar, notes, and reading |
Class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 11-11:50 in GeoChem 039. All assignments due by classtime on day noted. Baylor's office hours are Mondays 8:30-10:00 and Thursdays 12:00-1:30 or by appointment (just check my availability and request a time). The calendar of lectures with slides and links is below. It is also available as a public subscription iCalendar called "GEOL 0350: GeoMath" at http://tinyurl.com/mo3fewk. Be sure to click on the HW & Reading where you can check under "Description" and mabye also "more details" for assignment and reading links.
